Levee Maintenance – Part-time only. * Open until filled*
Salary Range: $12.00 hourly
Estimated Hours/Schedule: 20 hrs. per week.
Person must be willing be available for all weekend if emergency arises.
This position will begin as soon as the position is filled.
POSITION SUMMARY
Under general supervision, performs – duties within District performing routine maintenance activities; such as patrolling the levees, assist in vegetation abatement, emergency response; may act as a lead worker in the absence of a supervisor; and performs related work as required. Must have the ability to follow all CAL OSHA Guidelines and comply with all safety equipment and Hazmat training.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Duties emphasize the protection and preservation of District Levees and ditches. Incumbents interpret and apply regulations, and policies governing the operation of District facilities. They perform duties that require special training, and may work independently to administer, operate and maintain the levees.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Incumbents may not perform all duties. Duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Patrols levee and pump stations.
- Operates a variety of equipment needed for levee and ditch maintenance such as patrol vehicles, dump trucks, tractors, mowers, chippers, sprayers, trimmers, blowers, augers, power and hand tools.
- Protects District Levees from rodents.
- Attends training, and classes related to job duties on proper and safe use of equipment.
- At all times, demonstrates cooperative behavior with colleagues, supervisors and the public.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential duties and responsibilities of this position. The functions of this position are performed in outdoor locations. In this outdoor environment, incumbents may be fully or partially exposed to a variety of climatic conditions and geographical terrain. Specialized aspects of the work environment may also include exposure to equipment with moving parts and exposure to dust and cleaning agents. In addition, incumbents are exposed to the insects and animals used in program activities. Incumbents may be assigned an irregular working schedule including weekends, evenings and holidays.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties and responsibilities of this position. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to have: hearing and speech adequate to communicate in person, by telephone, by PA system and by radio; vision adequate to read standard text; bodily movement adequate to sit, walk, stand, and drive a vehicle for extended periods, traverse slopes and grades, and occasionally reach, turn, climb, bend, squat, stoop, kneel, crawl, push and pull; manual dexterity adequate to grasp objects, use fine manipulation, write and operate office machines and equipment; and strength to safely perform lifting and carrying of items up to 50 pounds.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Ability and Skill to:
- Work with power tools, chain saws, sprayers, etc.
- Interact courteously and effectively with landowners and board trustees.
- Provide care and maintenance of levee equipment.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Operate patrol vehicles.
- Must have valid CA drivers license.
- Must be able to pass drug test.
- Prioritize work assignments, meet deadlines and work effectively under pressure and with frequent interruptions; respond appropriately in an emergency situation.
- Take appropriate safety precautions in the performance of job duties.
- Communicate effectively with a wide range of people.
- Respond appropriately to changing situations.
- Maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
Knowledge of:
- Practices and procedures of pump maintenance.
- Tree conservation practices and procedures.
- Proper safety techniques in handling materials, power equipment and hand tools.
- Basic principles of leadership and supervision.
Education/Experience/Training
Any CAL OSHA training is highly desirable.
- Operation of tractors, excavators, any vehicle used in Levee maintenance is highly desirable.
- Any combination of experience, training and/or education that provided the required knowledge, skills is highly desirable
Special Requirements:
- Must possess and maintain a valid California driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.
- Must pass a background clearance prior to employment
